How to Meditate: For College Students

College is stressful, all of us know that but what are some ways to cope? A lot of students turn to alcohol or drugs and too much of these is unhealthy and can easily become addictive. Others just bottle up their stress and become very irritable, sad, loss, unmotivated, or even worse depressed. College is very pressuring and it’s not always easy balancing.

But, I have a stress relieving solution that may work for you..meditation.

Meditation can positively impact you tremendously. It’s not only for relaxation, whereas it can also help you gain patience and clarity when dealing with your emotions and actions.

A few years ago, I thought meditation was just people sitting down saying “hmmm” on a yoga mat, but I soon learned that’s not it at all. Meditation is what you personally make it, it doesn’t have to look a certain way or be done a certain way.

The biggest question I’ve received from other people in my age group on meditation is: “How do you do it?”

First, find a peaceful & quiet area where you know you can be completely comfortable. Whether this is your dorm/bedroom, a common room, a yoga room, a gym/rec center, living room, outdoors, wherever.

In this space, you can be laying down on your back, sitting up, or whatever position you’re comfortable in. The next thing is closing your eyes and repeating affirmations.

An affirmation is something you tell yourself for reassurance. Some examples are “Everything is okay.” “I’m worth it.” “I have control of my path.” “I’m doing well.” etc. It is all up to what YOU feel you need to reassure yourself.

That’s basically it, because the rest is up to you. You can stretch while doing this, play music, or whatever you prefer. Relax and take time out for yourself to redirect your energy and rejuvenate!
