Whiteness and Femininity Standards in Paris is Burning

I think that the children in Paris is Burning are internalizing the standards of whiteness and femininity because when it came to what was considered beautiful and femme, it was just a spectrum of who is closest to being the European beauty standard. Black women, especially dark skin Black women are often seen as more masculine and aggressive not dainty and elegant. So when it came to ball and getting into different houses there was a higher chance of them being seen as cis passing if they were lightskin, petite, and feminine like when Venus said she didnt even have to go by the original rules of getting in the House she wanted, she just had the opportunity given to her because she gave fem realness. Those changes reflected them generationally because the children were taught generations down the line that the biggest competition would be the girls who passed more and how to be beautiful you have to look a certain way to have that sex appeal and not be looked at as “ugly” just because you arent close to whiteness. Even in other productions about the Ball life, like Pose, it was mentioned how the girls that were light skin had it easier because if they didn't naturally pass as well as a dark skin girl they would automatically be seen as prettier because of the correlation that whiteness=femininity.
